MONROE COUNTY, FL – Cathy Crane was selected as the new Director of Monroe County Veterans Affairs by a five-person committee led by County Administrator Roman Gastesi. The position requires the approval of the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners at its Jan. 23 meeting in Marathon.
Crane will replace Gary Johnson, who is retiring in March.
The Veterans Affairs director oversees offices in Key Largo and Key West that assist about 8,000 full-time veterans, and an additional 2,500 seasonal veterans and active duty military in the Keys.
Crane was chosen for her extensive military and government experience. She served in the U.S. Army for 11 years and was deployed to South Korea for a year and Iraq for 14 months. She received an Army Commendation Medal with the “V” Device for Valor.
Crane currently serves as Transportation Administrator/Service Officer for Monroe County Veterans Affairs. She previously worked at the Monroe County Tax Collector’s office and the Monroe County Clerk of the Court. She holds a Master’s degree in Forensic Accounting and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
Crane is involved in the local veteran community, including the Military Affairs Committee, Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3911. She also is a graduate of Leadership Monroe.
James Carey will be promoted to Deputy Director of Veterans Affairs. He has been with Monroe County Veterans Affairs for 10 years.
