All Monroe County residents and business owners are encouraged to attend a public flood risk information open house to learn about their flood risk, view the newly proposed preliminary digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), and find out how the information may impact their property. Several informational sessions are scheduled for the public to drop in to review the newly released preliminary floodplain maps. A variety of specialists and experts will be available to answer questions about flood insurance, engineering, and more. The preliminary FIRM shows local areas at risk of flooding, including required elevations for new construction or structures that are improved greater than 50 percent of their value, as well as boundaries of areas that are considered likely to experience wave activity in a storm that has different requirements for structural building. The maps, once effective, will also help determine flood insurance costs.
